I went straight from the Red Bull Minor Threat boat trip to Bali for a few days to hang out and surf with Julian. Fresh off a win from Portugal he was excited to relax for a few days and get some fun waves. We stayed at an INSANE villa and had a few amazing dinners. Julian is hanging for a few more days, but I had to head to the airport today in time to make it home tomorrow for the USA championships at lowers. This morning I went straight from the boat to Bali to hang out with Julian Wilson for a few days. Congrats to him for winning the contest in Portugal! He gets here in a day and the waves are going to pump. Should be an awesome week....

Mexico Mission

We got some fun waves but at this particular beach break it's really hard to be in the right spot. Everybody got a fun few waves while we were down there. Well... Conner left to Indo last friday and being an only child sucks! So I decided to call a couple friends and get together a surf trip. Off to mexico to get tubed with Dusty Payne, Matt Wilkinson, photographer Damea Dorsey, Dusty's filmer Jason Hatch, and of course Ryan Perry. Hopefully we get super barreled for the next week. Channel Islands once again hooked up the quiver of a lifetime! Here's a photo of what I'm bringing on my trip:

Peru Dia Uno

Today is actually the 4th day we have spent in Peru, but it was day one of the competition and definitely the most exciting day thus far. 7 of our team member surfed today in the under 18 and 16 divisions. Our stats were really good with 6 of the 7 kids (including parker and I) winning our heats and one getting a 2nd place. The highlight for me was watching Kanoa drop his wallet three times on a nugget and get a 6.83. Parker's heat was right before mine at the opposite area so I didn't get to watch him, but he blew up on the right and bagged a 8.33 and a 6.50. I surfed on the left and started the heat with an 8.17 before it went pretty flat. I rode an inside wave for a 4.33 right before the end of the heat and then stammered over the urchin covered rocks unscathed. All in all the waves were really fun and everyone got the job done. We're waiting to find out the schedule for tomorrow, but everyone is pumped to be down here representing the USA surf team!!! Check out the webcast at www.isawjsc.com and cheer on the team! Hey guys... Conner and I just got home from the VQS champs down in Newport Beach. It is probably one of my favorite contests of the year because the vibe is always so funny and mellow. Perry and Conner came down to hangout and cheer me on and it totally worked! I got second behind my good friend Ian Crane. Besides myself, I wouldn't have had any other person than Ian win. Ian is classic and being the good friend he is, he bought me a sushi dinner with his 7 grand that he won! I ended up getting 3 grand and some cool prizes. Thanks to Oda for letting me stay at his house, the Volcom boys for the wildcard into the contest, Perry for filming and editing, and Conner for being my cheerleader. yew!

Fred Rubble

Web world, shredders, surf junkies, meet Fred. Fred has been a creation with the boys at Channel Islands surfbords and myself. We came up with the name Fred Rubble for a few different reasons. Mainly it is due to the fact that the board is kind of a mix of a bunch of different stuff. It isn't particularly like any other model in CI's line. It all spawned with my inability to ride a proton when the waves were junky and crappy and/or mushy and gutless. Protons are awesome and are my favorite in waves, but when your a heavy footed turd, they can be pretty hard to grovel on. So, we designed Fred. Fred is wider through the outline and in the tail, has a low entry rocker, fuller rails, and has a double concave to v through the back half. With these features I have found Fred to be the perfect all around short board for California. It has become my go-to board for contests and free surfing in any waves head high and under. It's still a work in progress but it is well under way, and man have I sure had a few really good ones. It loves to go fast and is still nice and loose while excelling when put on rail. Even I have managed to get in the air a few times on it, and that's saying something! The second reason we named it Fred Ruble, is because of my feet. I have THE widest feet ever. I have always joked around and said that I have Fred Flinstone feet. Well, it's true. Plus, I even look kind of like the guy.... Anyways, Fred is well underway, and in June it should be making an official release into the world of surfboards and ready for all of you to shred on.

Last summer, Dang that sounds like a long time ago... Well, last summer I went on a Stab trip with Jack Robo, Ian Gentil, and Caio Ibelli. We went to the telos islands and got a few super fun days of waves. Riley Blakeway was the man behind the lens on this trip and between sessions he kept me laughing my ass off. We've been trying to compile footage for a transworld movie, but at the same time not lose surfing from YWT. It's been a harder balance than we thought. Our Friday so far is AMAZING. Breakfast with the family, awesome food, some schoolwork, and now our newly designed YOUNGWISETAILS SHOES! This was a collaboration between YWT and Reef and we are pumped on the way they came out! The first two pairs that were made showed up at our house today and did not disappoint. I mean, who has TITS on the in-sole of their shoes?? Pretty hard to go wrong in our eyes. These are the samples and the real deal should be in stores soon! We'll keep you posted on the progress and keep an eye out for them in stores! He's a few photos of them... enjoy.

Coolest Thing EVER

Blair is the man. He is a very, very good man. We see eye to eye on pretty much everything. Today he sent me an email, just like most days. Except this one was special. It included the link to an amazing website showcasing girls in yoga pants. Being a 17 year old kid I have thought that yoga pants (the nice tight stretchy ones that tend to really highlight contours) are an awesome invention. On any given morning you are guaranteed to find coffee shops bustling with women in stretchy yoga pants. Lowers Porta-potty Missions

Last week we hung out down in Encinitas for a few days getting ready for the Rob Machado Junior event. We took one afternoon to head up to lowers and get some waves. It was super fun. Oh, and we were shooting follow cam with that dude, not burning him on every wave!!

A little while ago I was invited on a Volcom marketing trip to Western Australia with the team. Along for the trip was Dusty Payne, Mitch Coleborn, Nate Tyler, Ozzie Wright, Andrew Doheny, Alex Gray, and the one and only Matt Bemrose. With our massive surf group, we also had Jack Morrissey, Matt Shuster, Brian Bielman, Andrew Christie, and for a little of the trip Tom Carey documenting our every move. This was the most all time crew you could have on a trip. Constantly laughing, we did a lot of different activities. We surfed, chased kangaroos, ate a lot of food, randomly discovered an Ostrich egg in a supermarket, drove past Emus, the whole shibang. We did it all. I ended up perforating my eardrum about four days into the trip and didn't surf for about five days. However, I managed to stuff some ear plugs in and surf some of the most amazing waves of my life. We met up with a good man named Courtney Brown, who showed us around where he lives. Courtney is one of the most mellow cats you'll ever meet and is very hospitable. Thanks to Courtney we scored waves and got tubed all day. Below are some random Iphone photos I got from the trip. I wish I had some more photos, but I don't.

If you guys don't know who Ryan Perry is yet, well, now you do. He is the mysterious man behind the lens who spawned the original idea for The Adventures of the Young Wise Tails. He is a visual genius and has helped us create the young wise tails. Anyways, we don't want Ryan to hide behind the lens all of the time. We hang out with him all day and joke up about girls, surfing, farts, soft girls, and oh yeah, mostly girls. I never surf v land when I'm on the north shore because it is typically so crowded. However, the first few days of this trip had some perfect little double ups and the crowd was really mellow. I was able to sneak out there and to my surprise had two really fun surfs. It is an amazing little wave and I was pumped to finally have the opportunity of surfing out there. It's not a long one, but here's a few waves from those two surfs.

Wow? This piece definitely qualifies for spray of the day. Eddie Luparello did this painting on the bottom of one of Parker's boards that he just took to West OZ. Pretty amazing art work if you ask me. I would even go as far as saying it is my favorite ever.... What do you think?

Staples to Stitches

After tediously surfing my heats all last week with 8 staples in my head I arrived on the North shore in time to finally take them out. After two days of surfing really fun waves over here, I paddled out at pipe yesterday morning. It was solid 8-10 feet. Everyone was going left, so I dodged wash-through sets and picked up a few backdoor waves. I had two fun ones as well as a few pretty meager lefts. It started to rain and I decided to get one in. A big peaky backdoor one came and I was right in the spot for it. As I bottom turned around the white water the wave caught my inside rail and I belly flopped half way up the face. The wave proceeded to suck me up to the lip and then toss me out into the flats. Instead of landing on water, I went through what felt like 1 foot of water and slammed straight onto reef catching my fall with my left foot. My ankle and knee went semi numb while I was at victim to the wave dragging me across the reef. I hurried to make sure my ankle wasn't broken, but noticed a few pretty nice gashes in it. Sure enough I went to the ER and got 4 stitches in one of them and left looking like a mummy. I was planning on wrapping it with duct tape today and surfing but I could barely walk this morning due to hitting my ankle so hard...

Hawaiian Dog Days

Today was my first full day on the North Shore and it was awesome. I cruised over with my parents, grandparents, Perry, and good friend Eddie. Today was a perfect hawaiin day consisting of fun waves, breezy trades, and spicy tuna bowls from pupukea grill. While at the beach we encountered this dog that seemed to be having an amazing day himself. He shredded as well as doing some nice site seeing. Anyways, the swell forecast is looking good and I am in paradise, the only thing we're missing is Parker. Hopefully we will be getting simultaneously barreled on opposite sides of the planet (he's in West OZ).

Well, rainy days can always be cheered up by new surfboards! Thanks to Channel Island I now have 5 of the best looking surfboards I have ever seen in my entire life. All of these are bigger boards for an upcoming Volcom trip to Western Australia. Eddie Luparello came over today and did some insane artwork on them and they look all time. Pretty much, I'm the happiest kid alive. Thanks to all the boys at CI. Especially Blake, Trav, and Mike Andrews. Also, I just started riding for Monster and since I know how much the boys at Channel Island love energy drinks, I decided to hook them up with a couple of cases. Spray of The Day

White, brand new surfboards are a beautiful site. Flawless in every way. But, for some reason that we can't totally understand ourselves, so many of us decide to plaster colorful art work all over so many of these white nice looking boards. We suppose it has something to do with adding your own twist to your board. If everyone had the same white looking surfboard there would be no personality traits within the world of surfboards. So, we have decided to create "Spray of The Day." The spray of the day might be a colorful masterpiece or it might be the worst spray of the day and it could be anything in between. Put Simply, it's the study of the modern day surfboard paint jobs.

We've decided to kick it off with a paint job done by Evan Geiselman. Well, we believe Duncan Henville actually receives the design credit for this one. Evan is an awesome dude, but we must say that his East Coast loyalty is quite conflicting with his West Coast residency. Living in California we feel 100% obligated to stand up for the good old Lakers. Oh, and I'm pretty sure the Lakers gave the Orlando Magic a nice little ass whooping the other night. With that being said, here is the first "spray of the day."

A Bit of a Curveball Amidst Muddy Barrels.

The rain was absolutely down poring all day today. It was howling south wind in the morning and the ocean looked anything but inviting. After a three hour breakfast escapade with my parents and about 5 cups of coffee I had a weird feeling one sneaky stretch of beach might be good. My Dad and I carefully drove through the rain going 45 on the freeway to find wedgie, offshore, beach break pits with not a soul out. Sean Hayes paddled out with me and after about 8 perfect right tubes we each took off on this one wave and were sitting in perfect tubes heading towards each other. Sean on the left and I on the right. We were going super fast straight at each other and I had to awkwardly straighten out into the lip to avoid colliding with purps. While summer salting underwater I tweaked my back and then out of no where my board tagged me in the head. I came up and was about 2 feet from Sean and we paddled back out. My head didn't hurt but I decided i should check to make sure I didn't have a cut. I stuck my hand under my hood and when I pulled it out it was covered in blood. Dark blood was dripping down my face into my mouth and staining the muddy brown water. It was really hard to walk away from perfect a-framing tubes, but I was nauseous and was pretty sure I needed staples in my head. My Dad and I drove up to the ER where the doctor put 8 staples in my head. The pro junior and WQS start in huntington on wednesday so it looks like I will be surfing in a swimming cap or something.

Rainy Day Doodle

Eddie and I, well mostly Eddie, collaborated on this little doodle today. He has this cool Bamboo drawing pen set up for his computer so we fiddled around with it for a little while. We ended up with this funny little drawing. Eddie titled it "Pirateship Awesomeness." Eddie is and awesome artist and has a really cool blog showcasing his skills. I most admire Eddie's piece of art in which he donated his time and creativity to Keep-A-Breast foundation by painting a breast mold which was then auctioned off to raise money for breast cancer.

This video is absolutely amazing. It reminds me of when i was a little kid eating crap skateboarding down hills and getting horrible road rash. We actually used to call them raspberries and it sure never felt good to put a wetsuit on over them. I can only imagine how bad of road rash this dude would get if he were to eat it bombing that hill. When i watched this video it pretty much blew my mind. Hopefully it does the same for you, but maybe don't go out and try do what he's doing? The guys name is Kyle. I think he pretty much has the most rad style imaginable. Check it out.

JAPAN HELP

At this point everyone knows about the catastrophic events that have taken place in Japan. With that being said, Dane Reynolds (obviously needs no introduction) has been selling t-shirts on his website summerteeth.com. This week he has graciously decided to donate 100% of all profits from his t-shirts towards direct relief who in turn will be helping in any way they can to aid the country of Japan. Our family made a direct donation to direct relief and anything that all of us can do to help them will go a long way. Direct relief can take a single dollar and turn it into about 30 dollars of medical supplies that will go towards helping the people in Japan.

I don't know how Ryan is so good at editing, but he is. It's almost weird... This was yesterday and randomly the waves were really fun. I headed down to the beach with Eddie and we had a super fun little session with only 2 other guys out. I love it when that happens! It was weird though, the whole session the water was surging up and down the beach. We had full on tsunami surges. It was pretty crazy. I was just glad not to get sucked out to sea!! I'm sick now, but parker is finally recovered, almost.

Today in the midst of the madness on the goldy and after socialising with way too many people last night we had a nice mellow lunch with our good buddy Todd Glaser. We hadn't seen him in so long and it was rad to catch up. We enjoyed an amazing kebab before checking out his latest work. TW Trip to OZ.

Parker and I have been in Australia for about 30 hours so far, and I think we haven't laughed this hard in, well, since, ever. We came over with Chris Cote, Aaron Checkwood, and Perry to meet up with Jack Freestone and surf in Forster. We met Chris, Checky, and Jack in the aiport at Sydney before piling into a full "mom-mobile/fart-mobile" mini van and heading up the coast towards Forster. We were all squeezed in , Parker even jammed under a pile of suitcases. He has no problems falling asleep though so it wasn't an issue.... We're here to film for Transworld's new movie "Surprise Excitement Party" and more importantly have more fun than humanly possible. Trust us, with this crew that is an easily achievable task.

While waiting for my heat in Huntington, my parents and I were huddling in the car for warmth when my Dad let out a rather loud chuckle and told me to read the first sentence after the red square. As I squinted in on the small text and read the sentence, I also let out a good chuckle. And of course, once we both laughed, my mom had to see it for herself too. Yet again, this sentence was 3/3 on the chuckle factor. I hope you guys get as much of a laugh as I did.

I hate animal cruelty but for some reason this tickled my funny bone.

The sun was bright and hot shining straight into my eyes as I walked towards the contest set up on the point at Burleigh. I walked into the competitor’s area and set my board down. A few perfectly colored waves ran down the point feet from the big, black, barnacle-infested rocks. I threw on my trunks and grabbed my board, a 5’9” Fred Rubble. It was covered in pressure dings and the stringer stuck out slightly from the light glass job. It has a big drawing of a Flintstone character on the bottom that oddly resembles me. Everyone walked up the point to jump off the rocks, but I walked down the point to a sandy little nook. I didn’t want to risk my feet or my board. The water was incredibly refreshing and I sat in the shore break for a few minutes before paddling up the point. I started to get out to the line up when Banting took off on a wave. He pumped down the line a few feet from the rocks and popped a little air reverse. He got back out before me and caught another wave, pumped down the line and did another air. I sat below everyone and waited for a little wave. People paddled past me and headed up the point. I sat. Finally a shitty little wave went past everyone. I caught it and did a little cutback. I turned around. Banting was already doing another air. I made it back out and sat for a while longer. More kids paddled past me and caught waves. By now there was a line of people stretching the whole point. The whole round of 96 was hassling for perfect little 1 footers running along the rocks. I sat and watched everyone whilst slowly drifting down the point. The water felt nice and I enjoyed sitting on the shoulder watching. Finally a girl aggressively pumped down the line on a 6 incher. A little section popped up between us and I went. I pumped down the line to the beach break and did a floater. I caught a whitewater in. I went in and got a coffee. It was about 7 and the sun beat down like it was 12 in the afternoon…

A South Coast Post

It's 5 o'clock and I hear Owen walk out the front door. I hop out of bed and follow him out the door. We jump in the car and drive 5 minutes down the road. Owen whips around the corners in the rental car. I can tell he's excited. I'm still half asleep but we pull up to a little car park and I hesitate before following him down a little goat trail. We walk through a little jungle and come out on the edge of a cliff. I look to the left and at the end of a rock finger I watch a wave double up, hit a ledge and slab. It spits about 5 feet from a huge clump of rocks. There's no one out and we watch several boogie boarders walk away not wanting anything to do with the wave. I noticed helmets strapped to their backpacks. Owen froths while I contemplate whether or not I could make a drop on a wave. We decide it's not surf-able. I'm relieved. We head back to the house and grab the group before we drive to a wedgie beach where no ones around....

The next day we hear from some boogie boarders that it was 8 feet with rouge ten footers. One guy tried to catch a wave on his sponge and went face first into the reef. He broke his jaw and got cuts all over his face.

The crew is Dillon, Evan, Owen, and I. We went down to visit owen with Beron hall and Perry filming for Kai's new movie Lost Atlas. We didn't have internet and there was hardly a restaurant in site. We woke up at 5 most days and surfed until dark. Here starts a back up of photos and such from our adventures.

Hawaii Livin

Well, this trip has been really fun so far. Came over a few days early to practice for the Volcom Pipeline Pro and I have been having the time of my life. However, I have had some serious issues with breaking surfboards. 6 boards in two days to be exact. Pretty heavy. There has been some good looking girls and plenty of Pipeline. The standard crew has been getting really good waves. John Florence, Fuller, Kalani Chapman, Kawai, Wassel, Flynn, Burger, and most of all NICK RUPP. We got worked. The contest was maybe going to run this morning but due to lack of swell today and a lot of swell tomorrow, it was called a "Lei Day."I surf tomorrow in the first heat of the day with Marcus Hickman, Kaimana Jaquias, and Landom McNamara. Hopefully it goes well. If not, I get to say I surfed pumping Pipe with 3 other guys out.

Parker and I have both found ourselves in Sydney the last few days, but have managed not to meet up yet. This will change tomorrow though once he comes out to Narrabeen and joins the Hurley crew and me. We already enjoyed a festive night at Bondi beach for New Years Eve, but other than that we haven't been up to too much the last day or two. Waves have been flat, but we have been having a good time cruising with Beau Foster and Cooper Chapman. They've been showing us around and we'll be cruising with them for the next month. They are epic hosts. Much more to come from the land down under...

A Rainy Ramble

I woke up to my phone alarm going off. I rolled over and shut it off before looking out my window to see more dreary weather bearing down on the valley surrounding our house. It was 7:00. I stammered out of bed and in some sort of daze struggled to put on a green pair of chords and a plain black T-shirt. Finally dressed and shoed, I walked downstairs and into the kitchen where I drank a few glasses of water. The rain looked uninviting but I grabbed a 5-4-3 with a hood as well as my truck keys and ran to my car through the poring rain.

The freeway was sketchy. Some people drove fast and some really slow but regardless of their speed copious amounts of water flew off the back of people’s cars making the visibility horrible and therefore quite dangerous. I hesitantly pulled onto the side of the freeway in order to check a near by beach break. Cars flew by my window at 60 mph while I stared at the stormy ocean. The water was dark brown but a few wedges bumped up. It was nothing that looked worthy of braving the shit-flavored water. I drove home through the poring rain.

I was sitting on the couch next to a crackling fire when I answered my phone to hear an excited friend on the line. In a few sentences of jumbled words I made out that a different beach break was head high, light offshore, and barreling.

Hopeful, I got back in my car and drove through the rain for twenty minutes. I was excited to surf but in order to risk getting sick I had told myself the waves must be quite good.

When I got to the spot I sat in my truck and examined the ocean. Light offshore indeed, but small and mostly walled waves littered the beach. I recognized several people that I knew out in the water and only one of them got a good wave in the 20 minutes I was watching.

Mini pulled up next to me. We talked for a few minutes. I told him I was heading home for a dentist appointment at 12 o clock. I pulled out of the lot and turned my music back on. Just then my mom called me saying that appointment had been cancelled but I was scheduled for ENT appointment at 245.

I sat at my computer and searched for some new music. I didn’t find anything good. It all sounded boring or it was trying too hard to sound cool. Most of it was odd sounding and gave me a headache. I gave up and listened to songs that I had already developed a desired taste for.

I answered some emails, scanned some receipts, and stared at the surf report repeatedly every 15 minutes.

Then I made a Christmas card. Gifts are always hard but I think hand made gifts that have further meaning to them are better than materialistic ones. After all, Christmas isn’t about presents. Although, in today’s society, it sure has shifted in that direction. I was pleased with the card that I drew, which is rare given my artistic incompetence.

Parker came into my room. We agreed we were both hungry and walked down stairs to eat some lunch. The Tupperware full of Christmas muffins we baked the previous night easily distracted us and we each ate a few of them for lunch.

At 2:30 I left to drive to an ENT appointment I had in Goleta. My head slightly throbbed. I assumed it was from my lunch that consisted of mainly sugar. I experienced more rain and more dangerous driving on the way to the doctor.

The doctor prodded my nose with several different scopes and asked me many questions about the pain I had been experiencing in my sinuses. She came to the conclusion that I most likely had an infection that had created puss deep in my sinuses. I was grossed out. She prescribed me antibiotics. She made a point of telling me that her office assistant, a cute brunet girl who looked to be a little older than me, said I was a surfer.

I left the office a little disgruntled at having scopes and swabs shoved up my nose. I thanked the lady at the front desk and the brunet simultaneously poked her head around a wall and gave me a flirty wave.

I drove home. On the way I mailed the Christmas card I drew earlier in the day and picked up a new razor at CVS. It was still raining.

Now I’m sitting on the couch next to the same crackling fire as before. I’m contently full and comfortable in our cozy home wondering what is in store for tomorrow.

Afternoon Glass With a Jet Ski

This particular sunny afternoon we decided to take our buddy Alex's ski out. Alex is the man and we hang out with him quite frequently. Alex is always into having a good time. He's been working his ass of lately so we snuck over to his house and hijacked his ski for an afternoon of fun. The waves had been small, but we figured this was a perfect way to capitalize on an amazing afternoon. I drove it down from Santa Barbara harbor hesitantly flying over the glassy ocean surface at 45 mph. I don't know if that's fast or not for a ski but it sure felt like it. It was so smooth though that it was hard to avoid reaching that speed. We didn't have long to fly around and the waves were quite inconsistent but it sure was a blast. Alex drove a bit, but after a female friend of his showed up on the beach in her bikini I was the designated driver as Parker has little to no experience driving a jet ski. Andrew Schoener is another one of Alex's and our buddies. He bar tends down town and on the side is a talented photo and videographer. He showcases his work at futureenigma.com. Tis the Season.

It's almost the middle of december already. Turkey day flew by and Christmas is around the corner. A few days after that it will be 2011. Wow, time sure has sped by. It's been so nice to have all of our family together at home. Honestly, before this it had to have been at least 2 months before we were able to all spend time together. The waves had been meager around here for some time, but last week we had a few fun days. It was difficult to crawl out of bed early in the morning when I would look out to see ice coating our back yard, but the fact that there were finally waves made it well worth it. Parker and I would get pumped to creepy finger's while waiting for it to be light outside before loading up my Ice coated truck and heading to the beach. The sun shown bright in our eyes and the frigid water trickled through our wetsuits as we paddled out. It is finally winter time here and we couldn't be more grateful. Here's a quick edit Ryan did with some fun surf from last week!

Kokoro Tomatsuri

The above picture is Kokoro Tomatsuri before he completed his Mcdonalds Challenge a few weeks back. Kokoro is one of our best friends. Damn, I'm not even sure how long we have known each other. I believe our friendship began back when I was a really short fat kid who rode a blue doyle while wearing a white gath helmet and when Kokoro was an even skinnier Asian kid just learning how to catch waves. His dad Toma was a good surfer and kind of awkwardly introduced us. They would always speak Japanese to each other and I wasn't even sure if Kokoro spoke English at the time. We began to converse occasionally out surfing and before we knew it we were surfing every day after school together. Kokoro got good at surfing surprisingly fast and we used to flounder back and fourth at NSSA contests every weekend. Kokoro has always been an amazing student and I don't believe he has ever had under something crazy like a 4.2 GPA. For this reason, two years ago he decided to deport himself off to college in Sand Diego. UCSD to be exact. It was a hard day for Parker and I when we no longer had Kokoro around. We missed his Slayer dance offs, burrito eating contests at Corales, and many other things that should probably remain unnamed. Through all of our good times Kokoro has accumulated hoards of nicknames. A few, but definitely not the extent of them, include Tomatsushi, Megaladon, Kokoho, and Kokrio.

Kokoro lives in a house with several other college students in San Diego right next to the beach in Del Mar. He started a blog called Delmarsupials where they document their college experience. Many people associate college with fist pumping and all that weird junk, but Kokoro will surely come up with some very entertaining material. Trust us. Click HERE to check out the marsupials. We plan to visit Kokoro this spring and document some time spent in and around his house as well as the college... We're just waiting for some warmer weather, if you know what we mean.

Surfer Poll

Well, the famous Surfer Poll is around the corner. I think everybody looks forward to this time of year not just to see who wins, but the funny antics that come along with the massive party. This year moved venues to the famous Turtle Bay in Oahu. Not only is the venue very iconic, but I think most people who have been to Turtle Bay think of two words: Mai Tai. Those things to damage to people, and I am sure the people who are there for the party will experience their affects. Anyways, I made my vote for Surfer Poll and I hope you sure did as well. Here is a brief overview of who I think should win:

Best Tube: AI's barrel #2 in Costa Rica

Quite possibly the gnarliest barrel ever seen. If you watch the footage, the wave is black as night and as mean as a school teacher. The thing tries to knock him off a thousand different times and the legend AI is, grabs his rail and makes the wave feel bad it ever tried to make him fall. He gets spit out of the dark hole and just stands there like it happens all the time. RIP AI

breakthrough: Chippa Wilson

This is a complete toss up. In my mind, this award is between Craig Anderson and Chippa Wilson. I mean a year ago people didn't know who they were, and now they have lead movie parts in what seems like every big movie coming out, and at least a couple photos in every magazine. However, there can only be one winner. Any my vote went to Chippa. He stamped his spot as the new leading aerialist in the world in one year. Pretty amazing accomplishment if you ask me. Good Job Chippa

Video awards: Dane

Not even a question in my mind if Dane Reynolds is the best and most fun surfer to watch in the world. His video is not even fun, it is actually depressing. Throughout the whole movie I found myself asking how he got so good at surfing. It kinda freaks me out. The other videos were all time as well, i just couldnt believe what was happening in Dane's. I mean the other movies were far from bad, in fact, they were all amazing also. I just can't help but support the fact that Dane's surfing is on his own level. It's fun to watch because its new, unpredictable, and different. How can't you love it?

Those are my votes! I hope you enjoy them and agree with most of them. I don't want anybody to take them personally because this is solely my opinion. To tell you the truth, I almost hope you do disagree and we can talk about our disagreements. That's what is so awesome about these Surfer Polls; they raise the true discussions that need to be had in surfing. It's awesome! This is our new shed... it is going to be a cool little room we can get creative in. Whether it be painting boards or shaping boards, this is the spot where it is going to happen. I got a piece of foam from a broken long board and designed this awesome little bodysurf board/ boogie board. I have been hurt for weeks now and haven't been able to surf so I started to go crazy. But either way I AM GOING TO GET PITTED IN THE SHOREBREAK WITH THIS THING. It's called the Tray (heavily inspired by Bummy Koepenick) These are some photos my uncle Jason Baffa took. JP, a super rad guy who works at Hurley, has been hugely instrumental in our T-shirt production. He was hanging out with us yesterday and he even leant us a polaroid camera to snap a few pics with. We documented the process yesterday and we now have roughly 15 t shirts to give friends. It’s been a while since I’ve sat here in my room. It’s always warm, somewhat clean, and I know where to find all of the miscellaneous items that I need on a day to day basis. It feels good to be back and I will cherish every moment of it and my routine here at home. Waking up early in the morning, eating good healthy food, knowing where the waves will be fun, hanging out with the family, the list goes on… However, there is always that thought of being in Hawaii or Bali or wherever it may be completely unorganized, wandering around not knowing what will be found around the next corner. Ryan's Randoms

Ryan Perry is our partner in crime. The man behind the lens who makes the Adventures of the Young Wise Tails possible. If it weren't for him this blog would be quite lackluster at best. In order to give him a bit more credit for his role, we have decided to start "Ryan's Randoms." It will be a collection of random moments that Ryan provides us with. We've been in Hawaii for a few weeks now and decided to kick it off with a few funny occurrences that Ryan has captured.

This morning we were organizing to go film the reef girls doing yoga. Yeah, it was awesome as expected. This was the text message ryan sent to one of them this morning. Episode 5 will be based on this hawaii trip and will include miss reef contest, miss reef yoga sessions, and hot girls walking up and down the beach. Maybe a little bit of surfing as well...

Well my trip to Puerto Rico was interesting. It started off with a dinner at a Chili's in San Juan where every single female that walked by was absolutely smoking. The Chili's dinner kinda just set the tone for the whole trip, beautiful women everywhere. I traveled with John Oda and Andrew Jacobson. Andrew had a pretty serious "shit run" for most of our trip but he handled it like a champ. It started at LAX where the guy wouldn't let him get on the plane because he checked in 2 minutes and 45 seconds after you are allowed to. He was forced to pay 450 for boards and to get on the next flight where he had to go by himself. When we all finally arrived at the house, we unloaded our gear and crashed out for the night. We woke up to super fun surf with the whole WCT surfing. It was still awesome to just watch those guys surf but I am not going to lie I did get frustrated multiple times. When the contest started, we watched and had to sit around for three days straight at the contest site to see if they were going to run the contest I was in. After 2 long days of waiting on the beach they decided to run the Gromsearch in the windy wonky waves of Middles. I had all my friends there and I was just having fun. I surfed into the final and was lucky enough to get a win. All the Volcom guys took us all out to dinner and we had a blast. Brad Dougherty, Jack Morrissey, Daniel Terry, Tom Carey, the Pittman's, Oda, Andrew, Brad Gerlach, and I just sat around eating the best sushi ever and laughing our asses off. The next morning I woke up and left. In Dallas, I got a call from my good friend Nick Rupp asking me if Andy Irons was dead. I said I didn't know. I called my buddy and found out it was true. It was just the day before when I saw Andy leaving to the airport, I waved goodbye and he threw me a shaka. After seeing him drive out of the drive way, I wondered if he was going to win a world title again. Sadly, I was wrong as he died shortly after he left. I just can't even believe it to tell you the truth. Conner and I have always looked up to him and Bruce, and to see him gone is just unbearable. I got one of AI's last shakas, and I will never forget that moment until the day I die. That moment of seeing Andy one last time was worth a million dollars to me. I didn't know Andy that well, but man I loved that guy. RIP AI you're never dead in my mind.

Yesterday I was out at sunset. It was good size, 6 foot, with 8 foot sets and the swell was picking up fast. I paddled out on a brand new 6'7" which I knew was too small of a board. In the back of my mind I was thinking about what Andy would have rode. He probably would have rode a smaller board than everyone. As an easily influenced 17 year old I figured I'd do the same. As I paddled out I was picturing him in Blue Horizon standing in a perfect inside bowl and scoring a perfect ten to win the Sunset contest. When i got out to the line up everyone's board looked big. Kahea Heart paddled up to me. "Hey Kahea!" "How bigga board you ridin Conner?" "Shit, a 6'7." I knew he would tell me I was on too small of a board because he always did and he was usually right. "Time to step it up bud, the tide's getting low and the swell is coming up fast!" He paddled up the point while i sat a bit wider out of the crowd. I caught a few fun waves and made my way in. Oddly, AI's surfing at Sunset was in the back of my head the whole day and I wanted nothing more than to do a big carve before pulling into a big warbley tube in the bowl....

Today I sat lackadaisically in Pat's house. The waves were huge everywhere and I had just gotten all of my stuff moved in. No one was around. I was aimlessly wondering the Internet when my phone rang. It was Parker. I answered. "Dude Andy is dead" "Bullshit, your lieing," I responded. I heard people in the background mumbling in disbelief and at that moment i knew he wasn't lieing. My heart sank and my stomach did a flip as I responded, "I can't believe it." We talked for a few minutes in shock before Parker had to hang up as his flight from Dallas Texas, where Andy had passed away in his hotel room earlier today, was about to take off. I lied on my bed in disbelief. Andy Irons, Dead. There was no way. I tried to lie to myself and convince myself it was some sort of confusion. He was just in the hospital, sick. He went unconscious. He'd be fine, Andy was invincible. He'd survived huge pipe, wiamea, teahupoo, he was the only one who could beat Kelly Slater. No one could beat Kelly. Shit, he's about to win his 10th world title. My phone rang again, it was Chris Straley with the same news. Then it rang again, Kokoro, asking me if it was true. It slowly hit me... It was true. I felt sick. Thoughts ran through my head... Andy's wife Lindy 6 months pregnant, Bruce Irons, Andy's parents, Blair, all of Andy's friends here on the North Shore... It Couldn't be true. Andy had always been one of my favorite surfers. Him and Bruce, surfing's rock stars, the James Deans. No one had done it like they had. They were bad ass. They didn't care about all the bullshit and drama that surrounded the sport. They were the cool guys, the guys we aspired to surf like. More website headlines, blog posts. Andy, gone. I sat around the rest of the day, nothing sounded appealing....

Rest In Peace Andy Irons.

Surfing is interesting. Lots of things have to align to get a rad photo. This week there have been several elements of excellence appearing at different moments, yet it has been difficult for them to align at the same time. Wind, waves, light, my surfing... Anyways, this is an interesting photo that Straley took from a gorgeous evening session the other night. It is my twist on a "Wanna be Donovan parallel stance soul arch kick out" with a Straley slow shutter speed blur. I found it entertaining...

I'm sitting on the north shore with Chris Straley and Perry. The waves are flat and it's howling wind. One of the few activities we can seem to occupy ourselves with is Coffee drinking. All jacked up on coffee this morning we were reminiscing on past north shore experiences. I came across this video from last February when I was here. That time the wind was howling as well and the waves were marginal. I had a shocker and it spawned "the fart spangled shocker" video....

Ahhhh, Hawaii. The waves haven't been great, but it has been really nice and relaxing over here. Looks like the waves will be small most of the week, but there is talk of a pretty solid swell next week for the 4 star at Sunset. I will be dusting the cob webs off of my 6'10" and trying to locate my phantom board shorts with the built in diaper. Here are a few random pics from the last few days over here.

Unfortunately Parker wasn't able to make it to Bali with us, so he is MIA in this video. I headed down there to compete in the Oakley World Juniors and Ryan cruised with me. We had a super fun trip and I ended up 5th place in the contest. Once the contest was finished we had some fun surfs with Andrew Doheny, Mitch Crews, and Jack Freestone. The waves weren't amazing but definitely super fun. Ryan did a rad job on this video and we are super stoked on the way it came out, the topless foreign babes are definitely a nice addition. Hopefully those of you who were looking for more girls in the episodes are satisfied. Let us know your thoughts, concerns, ideas for new videos, and anything really. Always appreciate feedback.

I have been lost in Bali for about 16 days now and it has been an amazing time. The contest was really fun but since it has been over we have just been cruising and surfing. The talk of the town has been Dustin Humphrey's new joint in Canggu called Deus. It's a really rad place. Dustin hasn't shot photos in over a year and has focused his time and energy into his master piece of a store/restaurant/shaping bay. The walls are littered with unique artwork and hand crafted motorcycles line the concrete floor. The food is really good but I will warn you of the deadly hot chili peppers that loom inside the basil beef. I had a horrible experience involving one of these little guys that included tears, sweating, and blood gushing from my tongue. Anyways, last night Wolfmother played a live show at Deus and it was amazing. Everyone crammed into the back yard of the place like sardines while the band went off. They played for about an hour and a half and there was no lack of excitement on the Deus premises. Last but surely not least, was the amount of tail that was scattered throughout the party. A good meal, great music, hanging with my friends, and plenty of sight seeing made for an excellent night. I stole a few photos off of Mitch Ross' Life Without Andy website.....

Continued Ripping

Yea Conner!!!! He just smoked Alejo Muniz (the number one seeded Brazilian) to get into round 4. Conner looked really good on those Canggu rights yet again. It was hard to tell because of the really bad webcast, but Conner ripped one wave to nail a solid 8. Alejo needed a 7 or something at the very end and did a pretty good little air, but the judges decided to be awesome and not give him the score. So Conner, now heading into round 4 at Keramas, drew yet another Brazilian to surf against. Hopefully the swell picks up so the double hand stalls and grab rail carves come out to play. Until then, GO CONNER!!!!!

Bali Rippin'

Conner is in Bali right now competing in the Oakley World Junior event that was supposed to be at Keramas, the sickest right in Bali, but because of the non cooperating swell it's at Canggu. Canggu is another fun little right reef break that has a few good sections on it and is definitely contestable. Conner surfed his first heat and got third. Not the ideal scenario. However, he did not go down without a proper display of how to do a rail carve. He got a set wave and severely decapitated the lip with 3 huge snaps. He got a 8.00 but just couldn't back it up. Anyways, Conner surfs against Jesse Mendes in the next round. Bye Bye Jesse... (what? I get to cheer on my older brother.) SMOKE EM!!!
